Forbidden Island 'Gunkanjima' in Japan [PICS]
Hashima Island, commonly called Gunkanjima Island or 'Battleship Island' in English, is the nickname for a remote island in Japanese offshore. Once used for mining coal, at it's peak it has a thriving community and one of the world's largest population density ever. At that time mining on this island is progressively decreasing, which cause the entire population left the island. Later on, visiting the island is strictly prohibited except through the designated tour route which unfortunately does not allow tourists to explore the island deeply.
"I was lucky enough to meet with fellow urban explorers who brought me to the island in secret. We only have a few hours of time to photograph the place, but I'm overwhelmed by the beauty of the mysterious object in the decaying concrete buildings and were abandoned by residents who were forced to leave their home about 30 years ago." -Michael Gakuran-
Let's go through the images one by one.
